Ministry for Children
Oranga Tamariki (aka Ministry for Children) is a government department responsible for the well-being of children, specifically children at risk of harm and children in the care of the State. It was previously called Child Youth & Family and has had several other names throughout its history.
The department operates under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 (also called the Children’s and Young People’s Well-being Act 1989), the purpose of which is to promote the well-being of children, young persons, and their families, whānau, hapū, iwi, and family groups.
